Butterfly Effect 2

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

butterflyeffect2 Just a quick note on this picture show. I watched it recently and it was fairly disappointing even though my expectations were that even if it was not quite as good as the original, I wouldn’t have felt that I had wasted about 2 hours of my time. Unlike the first one which revolves around the significance of how one decision in life can alter your future which is somewhat of an interesting concept, the sequel proceeds to inundate itself with flashbacks, rewinds and such akin to “Click” to the point where I simply didn’t care about what happened about. The reason why the first one was successful was because it demonstrated the significance of one important life decision and how it could impact your future, the sequel loses any sense of significance when it turns the main character’s experience into a broken down TIVO event. No wonder it received a 4/10 rating on imdb. Don’t bother.

Democracy – Best New Multimedia Application, A Must See!

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

democracy Democracy is an application that gathers a great deal of all the video content on the net and allows you to manage it within the same framework. It is much like something along the lines of a PVR for TV except this is for the internet. The screenshot on the left shows the channel guide which is what first opens when you begin the application. It becomes your personal center for your own selected video content you want to download, store and watch. Democracy allows you to control these factors and seems to pride itself on the ability to do this as opposed to its television counterpart which no matter how many channels or mediums are available, still filters your content. With Democracy, you can watch music videos you would see on cable tv or a tech show done in someone’s basement. The choice is yours. Here are some of the preference controls that Democracy affords you:

  • choose where on your computer you would like to store your downloaded videos
  • select how long you want to keep these files (a matter of days or you can choose to remove them yourself)
  • create your own channel presets – over 600 channels from which to choose
  • control your downloads of your chosen shows to grab each new episode when it comes out or capture all
  • search for videos by popularity, date or browse categories
  • a built in video player that actually seems to work quite well

I would definitely recommend checking out Democracy. It is available for Linux, Windows and Mac.

UFC 64 – Unstoppable

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

franklin UFC 64 – Unstoppable is over and it was one of the best PPV events I have ever seen. The main event was Rich Franklin vs Anderson Silva. UFC Unstoppable was an ironic title indeed. The two most dominating forces in all of the UFC overall are Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes. Matt Hughes defended his title against BJ Penn at UFC 63 and won convincingly. The anticipation for UFC 64 was exciting in the sense that I wanted to see how dominating Rich Franklin would be against Anderson Silva. The Challenging Brazilian was no slouch for sure, but Franklin had looked nothing but invinceable in his last several outings. The fight surprisingly ended in the first round courtesy of Silva’s knees dealt from within the clinch. Franklin clearly was unprepared for this barrage of knees and noticeably winced upon the onslaught. Franklin was in trouble and once his midsection was battered there was no looking back for Silva. Hughes was defeated and came back even stronger and I would only expect the same from Franklin. Complacency may have played a part in the loss so this could be the setback that Franklin needed to light a fire in him. Look for Frankin to come back even more dominating than ever. Sadly, this loss took place in front of his girlfriend and family who were there watching live for the first time. Franklin’s revenge should be very satisfying.

franklin The fight at the 155 lb weight class was also quite good. It featured Kenny “KenFlo” Florian vs. Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk. Kenny was known for his participation on The Ultimate Fighter which may not have yielded the best results, but in his defense he was fighting at the wrong weight class. Sean Sherk, known for his immaculately impressive physique, had been dominant over his opponents and boasted losses only to the most elite competitors who handed him those defeats at a higher weight class. The fight went the distance and the only concern was the cut that was opened on the top of Sherk’s head by one of Florian’s sharp elbows. Blood poured out round through round as this occured in the second frame. The blood seemed to be as much of a problem for Florian as Sherk as when Sherk was in the mount position, blood spouted into Florian’s eyes and face. Thankfully doctors allowed the fight to continue and Sherk was crowned Champion. The title was previously vacant as Jens Pulver had left after winning the title and the 155 class eroded but now appears to be back and as popular as ever.

Although there had been some disappointing turnouts from some competitors in previous pay per views, UFC may not have exhibited its title very well, but it surely did not disappoint. There were pleny of other great fights on the card as well.

The Worst Video Ever Uploaded Online

Monday, October 16th, 2006

cam Ok, so I am going to intentionally leave out some details here so most likely anything missing from this post is done on purpose, but I will say this much…When you want to post video online there are some simple rules:

  • Pick a decent format – my preference is in this order > AVI, MPG/MPEG, MOV and WMV are equally bad last resorts, ASF (only if you are stuck and have no alternative). Make sure your file is playable in common media applications.
  • Make sure it is viewable (do not upload anything too pixelated or with terrible audio quality
  • Ensure the size is relative to its purpose (a quick intro should not take too long to download or cache, alternatively, something that depends on high quality should not be compressed too much
  • It should be somewhat polished relative to its intention. If you want a lot of people to be able to watch it, make sure it is fairly clean and looks and sounds good.

I will give you the run down of the video I was completely disgusted to see even uploaded now. It was encoded into 4 different nsv files (yes –> Nullsoft video – this means you need to install Winamp in Windows and if you are using Linux – mplayer may work, with Mac I am not sure what would work – VLC would be worth a shot). Terrible choice of format overall. Secondly, the file was split into 4 files totally unnecessarily and it was recommended that you put them all in your playlist and make sure that shuffle is not on so they wouldn’t play in the right order. On top of this hassle, the video and audio itself was atrocious. I have never in my life seen such poor video uploaded so that there is so much pixelation I can barely even make out what is happening on the screen. When you can actually witness the person alt-tabbing back to their desktop to check their browser mid stream, this is a really bad sign. I couldn’t even watch it. I know some people will cry and say that if you don’t want to watch it, then just don’t watch it, but that is missing the point here. This example is like spam in email, if you have absolutely no clue about how to make a good video, don’t bother ever uploading it. Even if people wanted to watch your content, if it’s that horrible, it will only make them bitter and bring your reputation down. Here are some quotes from others to support my claim:

  • “What a waste of time! Why would you waste YOUR time putting up garbage like this??”
  • “Sorry to the uploader But this is really bad”
  • “the process is ridiculously time consuming”
  • “Thanx but no thanx, stick to what works”
  • “Seriously this is terrible”
  • “This is awful “

Just to mention a few. So, please take these things into consideration in the future for anyone who does video on the web!

New Killswitch

Monday, October 16th, 2006

daylight dies After listening to “This Fire Burns” enough times, I was hoping the new Killswitch would continue with that same style of sound. The new offering called “As Daylight Dies” does carry on in the same vein. Fans of Killswitch Engage from the past should not be disappointed. I am still listening to the new cd but so far am pleased to hear tracks like “Break the Silence”, “Daylight Dies”, “For You” and “My Curse”. These are definitely worth checking out, I have tended to listen to the beginning part of the tracklist so the latter is yet to be heard with the same frequency. Any mainstay Killswitch people should enjoy “As Daylight Dies” and if you are new to Killswitch but typically like some fast drumming here and there, token growling on occasion and melodic interludes, Killswitch could be just what you need.
